The University of York Feminist society usually holds weekly meetings on an accessible room on campus. These meetings vary from collaborations with other societies, to film viewings, to talks and debates with panels or guest speakers.

We also have a strong online presence, especially in recent times, and encourage anyone to join in on our online events. You can find us on instagram, facebook, twitter, and wordpress at @uoyfemsoc

We practice inclusive and intersectional feminism! No prior knowledge of feminism is needed to join or participate and we encourage everyone to join in. We are all learning and educating ourselves and others, and FemSoc aims to create a space to do so. We have a ยฃ4 membership fee, however this is optional, and our events are mainly free, unless we are raising donations.

The membership fee goes to maintaining events!

Not behaving like everyone expects you to is key to feminism and overcoming gender boundaries. As a white woman, it is crucial to me that those privileged enough use this to uplift those not from the Global West or in marginalised communities such as those who identify as LGBTQ+.

Feminism Needs You! Feminism is for everyone - whether you are fighting for a girl's right to education, campaigning to overturn 'traditional' patriarchal law, or simply believe in a woman's right to become a contented crazy cat lady if she so wishes!

Inequality between the genders is still very much prevalent in society and the everyday prejudices still faced by women make feminism as necessary as ever. As part of my belief that everyone should be included in the conversation of change, I'm proud to be the Feminist Society convener for the Women and Non-Binary Network!

For me, Feminism is an inclusive space in which no voice is marginalised. Through my position in FemSoc, I hope to encourage people of colour to break down the stigmas associated with race, ethnicity and religion.

Feminism to me isnโ€™t only about the advocacy of womenโ€™s rights on the basis of equality, itโ€™s the empowerment, inclusivity, and a chance to make a positive difference in the world.

For me, Feminism must be intersectional, and is about fighting
for people's rights and for positive change whether that be in legal or
social contexts. At it's core, it's about respect, love and support for all
people, regardless of background!

What is Feminism to You: Feminism to us is about being intersectional and inclusive. Feminism is a way to unify people and to
campaign for those in society who are marginalised. FemSoc at York is
a space reflective of these ideas! This next year we will be collaborating as much as possible to raise awareness about how many
issues are feminist issues! We aim to grow, not just in members, but also in the volume of our voices!

and empowering one another. I want to help end discrimination and, as serious as it is, we should be able to have fun raising awareness for such issues.

For me, Feminism is a political and social movement that works against "the patriarchy" that oppresses women in all sectors by reducing their privileges. As feminists, we aim for the rise of women to meet the end of gender inequality.

Feminism to me means being actively intersectional, anti-racist and anti-ableist to create space for everyone at the table. It's about lifting people up to create equality of all genders.

Feminism to me is power to the oppressed, itโ€™s intersectional and inclusive, it allows women to untangle their internalised misogyny, wear what they want, behave how they want, look how they want without judging themselves or others, it desires to break down the patriarchal system and replace it with a new kinder and fairer system.

In my view, Feminism involves radical changes, fighting for rights that women are deprived of solely based on their sex and/or gender and also uplifting other groups that suffer from a misogynistic society.

My favourite quote from Charlotte Perkins Gilman is "there is no female mind...the brain is not an organ of sexโ€, and to me feminism means the complete loss of this assumption that is still far too prevalent in our society. I believe people should be viewed as individuals with unique experiences who are empowered by association with intersectional groups.

Itโ€™s about being able to raise others up, being open to new ideas and love and respect those around you, whilst seeing your own worth. I see feminism as providing an ongoing opportunity to listen and learn, which is just as valuable to yourself, as it is to others.
